History

Salmon is said to have existed in prehistoric times and was appreciated by many Native American cultures. The term "salmon" comes from the Latin word "Salmo," which was then shortened to "samoun" in English. Early European settlers, particularly indentured servants, were given a salmon-rich diet found in abundance throughout America’s East and West coasts. New England pioneered the practice of canning salmon around 1840, and the goods were carried to California.

On the other hand, California began providing east America with canned salmon in 1864. The salmon population in the West waterways was gradually depleted, and now, Canada and Europe supply the majority of Atlantic salmon. However, the supply of salmon became marketed in 1980, with a global production of 600,000 metric tonnes. In 2004, its output increased by 400 percent, reaching nearly 2,400,000 metric tonnes. As salmon aquaculture became more well-known and popular, wild salmon populations in North America plummeted. In addition, Europe, Japan, and Russia are now engaged in salmon farming.

There are eight species of salmon in North America, with five found only in the Pacific seas. It has a solid texture and several health advantages. It's high in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and B vitamins.
