The most popular food in Tamil Nadu is Sankara Fish Fry, found in almost every home.

Red Snapper is also known as "Tambusa in Hindi," Malayalam as "Pahari," Telugu as "Korameenuenu," Thundava as "Rangu," and Kerala as "Chempalli." The Snapper family has 113 species, including the Red Snapper, and the fish in this family are known as "snappers."

Snapper is a type of fish found on the reefs of the western Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico.

Red Snapper acquired its name from its red and pink shiny scales, making it a tasty fish. The mid-Atlantic and Caribbean coasts are abundant in red Snapper. This fish may live for up to 50 years.

The fish is 30-61 cm long and weighs between 4.5 and 9 kg, with pink to brilliant red metallic skin.

Because of its enticing mild flavor and exquisite texture, it is one of the most well-known types of seafood. The flesh of the snapper is white and solid in texture. The meat is tender and flavorful, with a nutty flavor. Sankara meen is better suited to frying than curry. It's topped with homemade spicy masala and shallow fried in oil, and it's flavorful, tasty & delicious.

Health Benefits of eating Sankara Meen

  1. Low Calories to keep you healthy
Sankara meen is a beneficial fish for health-conscious consumers since it has no trans fat. This fish is minimal in calories and includes just 5% fat. However, Sankara Fish is unsuitable for pregnant women because of its high mercury content.
  2. It helps to keep a healthy metabolism in check
Because of its high potassium level, eating Snapper assists in weight reduction by increasing the body's metabolism. Potassium is found in Snapper, and it activates energy-metabolizing enzymes. A potassium-deficient diet might increase your chances of having a stroke, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, or kidney stones.
  3. Fats that are good for you
Red Snapper is high in omega-3 fatty acids. According to the American Heart Association, eating fish daily can help reduce your risk of heart disease, atherosclerosis, and high blood cholesterol.
Thyroid health + increased white blood cells
Snapper provides approximately 70% of the selenium necessary in a 2,000-calorie diet. It is essential for white blood cell function (it increases the number of white blood cells generated by the body). Still, it is also necessary for the appropriate functioning of the thyroid gland. Selenium is a vital antioxidant that we don't hear enough about because of its potential to prevent DNA damage, arthritis, cancer, and heart disease caused by free radical chemicals.
  4. Digestion is simple
Smooth digestion is required for appropriate food absorption. Snapper's nutrients decrease inflammation and improve food absorption into the circulation and other organs, making digestion easier and reducing the risk of stomach problems.
  5. Great Mind Stimulation
Because of all the essential nutrients, Snapper is known as brain food (Vitamin A, selenium, Omega-3 fatty acids, and potassium). Consumption of fish like Snapper boosts cognitive function and strengthens the neurological system.

  • Shallots: 1 cup
  • Tomato - 1 finely chopped
  • Gingelly Oil - 3 tablespoons

Instructions to cook Red Snapper Fish

Step 1: Wash and clean the fish pieces twice or three times before beginning to make the Sankara Meen Kuzhambu dish. Then, soak the fish pieces in turmeric-infused water for 30 minutes.

Step 2: Add oil to a nonstick Kadai/wok. Add mustard seeds, and black stone blooms to the heated oil. Allow it to sputter.

Step 3: Cook the shallots until they are transparent. Sauté the ginger-garlic paste until the raw scent has gone away.

Step 4: Cook until the tomatoes are soft, then add the chopped tomatoes. Now add all the spice powders and cook until the raw scent disappears.

Step 5: Soak the KoKum tamarind for approximately an hour in hot water before extracting the juice. Kodum puli juice is difficult to remove. Therefore, I soaked the tamarind in water for roughly an hour before grinding it into a fine paste and adding it to the pan.

Step 6: Add a cup of water and tamarind juice. Cover the pot and cook it. Season it to taste with the appropriate quantity of salt.

Step 7: When the curry begins to boil, add the fish pieces and simmer over low heat until the fish is well cooked, and the oil has separated from the curry.

Step 8: Serve Sankara Meen Kuzhambu Recipe with plain rice and Beetroot Thoran for a weekday lunch.
